oy gefilte!

Diane, the caretaker at Black and White Cat World, writes that "Costco had the institutional size can of gefilte fish on sale for 97c -- my husband is the one who suggested this would be a good deal for the wild cats. So we stocked up.

Packed in oil, there are enough patties in each can for a couple days. I cut them in half, trying to spare the kitties' digestive systems, but the cats don't care about that. They hop from treat to treat, gorging themselves on as much whitefish, carp, mullet, passover wheat, etc, as they can getbefore another cat pushes them off. I'll save the oil, congealed with the cold (I store the opened can on my enclosed porch), for after the fish is gone, to mix with their Meow Mix."

Ha ha ha ... love it! I think the cat with the white blaze looking longingly at the gefilte fish is Rachamim. Many of the cats at B & W Cat World have Jewish names, so the gefilte fish is quite apropos. But Diane ... where's the chrain?

Readers: yes, we are open to donations of cases of gefilte fish!

I'd be inclined to caution in feeding this regularly, as onion does appear before matzoh meal on the ingredient list.

Eep... they seem to be enjoying themselves. But you may want to check the ingredients on the cans beforehand, as it seems onions are typically ground into the mixture and onions are bad for cats. :-/

My understanding is onions can be toxic to cats and should NEVER be given to them.

At http://www.peteducation.com/dictionary_term.cfm?term=heinz%20body: Heinz body anemia.
A condition in which the red blood cells are destroyed and this results in anemia. The specific type of anemia is called 'Heinz body anemia' because the red cells develop an abnormality called a 'Heinz body' which can be seen under the microscope. This anemia can occur as a reaction to certain medications and also in cats who eat onions. Heinz bodies are formed by damage to the hemoglobin component molecules, usually through oxidations, or the a change of an internal amino acid residue(from an inherited mutation), which causes the damaged molecules to, often degrade and the precipitate, damaging the cell membrane by hydrophobically adsorbing to it thereby increasing cell permeability, leading to premature cell lysis.

All that gefilte fish!
