Egypt is a gorgeous, sweet, funny,  petite and fluffy girl, under a year old, patiently waiting for a special adopter to come along and give her a forever home.  She was abandoned when she was about six months old at the Hyde Park Animal Clinic for unknown reasons. One of our volunteers happened to be there and brought her into our foster program.  Egypt was very scared by her experience and was initially very nervous in her first foster home.  Michelle and family were very patient and although it took a while, Egypt did come around -- see her previous post here.

Egypt and the resident dog did not get along, so we moved to a new foster home -- with other cats.

It took Egypt about two months to get comfortable in her new foster home, but she has really come out of her shell.  She loves being around people and will follow you around to lounge on the porch or the bed, and even comes when you call her name.  She is very vocal with a range of chirps, "barks," and meows, and if you scratch her back while she's eating, she makes a hilarious "nom nom nom" noise that lets you know shes happy but busy scarfing down treats!  She enjoys a laser pointer or string toy, and goes crazy for salmon treats.  She has longer hair so does need to be brushed regularly, and especially enjoys it on her face!  She sleeps snuggled up to fostermom every night. She now gets along fine with the female cat in the foster home, but not with the male cat resident.

Fostermom has fallen head over heels for this funny girl who got such a rough start in life but hopes Egypt will get a forever home soon!  She is spayed, up to date on shots, and tested neg/neg, and will need an adopter with patience to wait for the rewards that come with giving her time to adjust and let her personality shine. Egypt

Egypt was abandoned at our local vet's office. Fostermom Michelle writes "Egpyt was very, very shy when she came to live with us. It took her over a month to be comfortable in our house. She now spends her days stretched out in a sunny patch on the floor or curled up near us. She can be quite vocal – especially in the morning - and will ask for a massage until she gets it! She is little – about 8 months old and tiny. Her litter box habits are excellent. She dutifully uses her sisal scratching post. Since she has been with us she has gone from hiding in the bathroom all day & night to greeting me when I come home. She and the dog tolerate each other -- she is definitely in control of that relationship!" Thank you to Egypt's fosterfamily, who are on their first foray as fosterers. Great work!

We call her Kit Kat
She is getting better being with us
Sometimes she makes a fuss
Cute little Kit Kat

Sometimes she swipes
She likes fresh catnip (a little bit)
She is a brown tabby
She lays on the floor
While you’re on the computer
Soft little Kit Kat

She’s off to herself
She has a plume tail
Hers ears perk up
Nice little Kit Kat

Pet her with slow gentle strokes
Like you brush your teeth
Then she won’t swipe or nip
Sweet little Kit Kat

She needs her own space
For a little while,
About a week or two

Updates: Egypt and Veronica

We love updates from adopters and today we have lovely updates on two recent alumnas: Egypt and Veronica.

Egypt's back story. And her update: "She's doing fantastic and has really settled into her role as queen of the apartment. Whenever I read on my bed she hops up and makes herself comfortable on top of me and insists that I pay attention to her rather than the book I'm reading. She's also recently discovered that the 'magical' computer screen moves. I don't know why I bother buying her toys when she can spend hours batting at the mouse icon, or the automatically updating facebook news feed haha. She's such a sweetie and never fails to make me smile after a long day at work ...   Thanks so much for the opportunity to adapt such a pretty little girl. You do a fantastic service both for these little guys without a home and to the lucky owners who get to take them home :) Keep up the good work!"

Veronica's back story. And her update: "She's doing very well - it didn't take her long at all to adjust to her new home and she seems very comfortable. I've renamed her Smoochy because she's so affectionate -- she has the adorable habit of pressing her nose to my nose when I pet her."

September Adoption Roundup

Thanks to everyone on our adoption team, including our wonderful fosterparents, our vet-care coordinator Laura, our foster coordinator Julie, our reference-checker Marilee, our adoption counselors, Treehouse drivers, and our Adoption Coordinator Ainat --  the following lucky cats went home in September:

All of these cats except Egypt (who was abandoned at the vet's office) were plucked out of alleys and garages south of the Midway around Cottage Grove.

Here is a little update on Egypt, from furrrrever mom Christina. I love it when a shy cat can make a bond with that special person who just knows -- just knows -- that this is the right cat:

Egypt is doing very well in her new home! As mentioned before I adopted her, she is taking a little bit to get used to her new environment. Her favorite place thus far has been under my bed. But just this morning when I woke up, instead of fleeing to under my bed like she normally has been doing, she greeted me with a 'meow meow' and stood expectantly by her food bowl when I got her food out. :) And last night when I was on the my laptop, she chose to sit next to me. So she's definitely coming out of her shell. Because she's been so shy I haven't gotten a picture of her and I interacting, but I did get a pic of her sitting near my bed (attached). Thanks so much for the opportunity to adopt such a lovely kitty :)

Lincoln

We will let new foster mom do the talking for our new intake, Mr. Lincoln, who is estimated to be approximately 16-18 years old.  He was previously relinquished at HPAC and taken in by a community volunteer for a little while, but their situation recently changed and he has now become a Hyde Park Cat:

"Lincoln is a sweet old thing with a lion's prowling, soulful eyes.  He's very easy-going, and never lacks for curiosity, even being eager to explore our apartment on his first night with us. Lincoln's so regal, calm, sweet and curious that we think he must have been one of the cats revered in ancient Egypt in a past life. He adores having his head and cheeks scratched, and if you scratch him on the right side of his face and cup his head just so, he'll be sure to reward you with a blissful look, lots of purring, and a chuckle-worthy tick where he jerks his back leg.

It's heartbreaking to think of this wonderful old soul stuck in a shelter, overlooked and waiting to be euthanized. We think his venerable old age and especially his incredibly sweet, mild and loving temperament deserve only comfort, ease and love in return."
