THANX SUSAN!

A big thanx to Susan who just donated the cost of one spay/neuter surgery on behalf of her rescued cat SMUDGE.

update

*** WE NEED CAT FOOD. CAN YOU DONATE A FEW TINS OF CAT FOOD OR A BAG OF DRY FOOD? ***

Out of an estimated twelve cats in the 62nd street alley, SIX have been caught and "fixed" (spayed or neutered). One additional cat (Bessie) was taken in by some grad students and had several kittens.

The six cats caught:

  • Mimi, aka Mama cat. Mimi is currently residing at Tree House and will probably be put up for adoption there.

  • Aida, young mostly-white female. Spayed!
  • Bobby, young black-and-white male. Neutered!

  • Chandra, young gray male. Neutered!
  • Dana, very young male. Neutered!
  • Emilee, very young female. Spayed!

WE NEED MONEY TO PAY FOR THE CATS' SURGERIES. PLEASE SEND MONEY. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE HOW YOU CAN HELP -- we need transporters, places for cats (even TWO NIGHTS while they await/recover from surgery would be sooooooo helpful), and cat stuffs.
  • Aida and Bobby

Aida (female, mostly white) and Bobby (black-and-white male) are young cats rescued from the 62nd street alley. Lookit the luuuuuuv!

Aida and Bobby clearly love each other and would do best kept as a pair. Currently they allow petting and purr when petted. You can also see that Aida will sit on a lap!

    frightening statistics

    Did you know?

    - One female cat and her offspring can produce over 420,000 cats in seven years!
    - In 2006, 19,701 cats and dogs were killed in Chicago's shelters.
    - 80% of impounded cats are killed in shelters every year!
    - Spaying and neutering stops the cycle of breeding and killing.
    - Euthanasia is the #1 killer of cats.
    - Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born.

    62nd Street Alley Cat Project

This blog is about a cat colony living in YOUR backyard -- near 62nd street in an alley between University and Greenwood. Do you live in the Hyde Park area? If so, please consider helping us solve this very solvable problem! We believe there are 12 cats in this colony, including, at the outset, two pregnant gals. If enough of us in the community donate or get involved, we can stop this colony from getting any bigger ... and help these cats have a better life.

    HOW TO HELP

Contact your local alderperson about the proposed ordinance.

We can use your money, any amount, to pay for spay/neuter surgeries for the cats. Currently PAWS Chicago offers spay/neuter surgery for feral cats for $20. If you could sponsor one cat for us, we'd be grateful!

You can also donate bags or tins of cat food.

Two important ways you can help:

  • if you have a car, can you transport cats from Hyde Park to PAWS Chicago for their surgery and/or back home? If you could commit to doing this for ONE cat it would make a world of difference!

  • do you have a place you can keep a caged cat prior to and after surgery (two or three nights total)? This could be an extra bathroom, a garage, an enclosed porch ...
  •
